70 Alaska Students will Each Receive a $2,000 scholarship for 2018-19 School Year
ANCHORAGE, Alaska – GCI continued its commitment to developing Alaska’s next generation of leaders and announced a $140,000 statewide scholarship program for Alaska students who are pursuing secondary education.
The 2018 GCI Scholarship Program will award $2,000 scholarships to 70 students for the 2018-2019 academic year. The funds can be used for tuition and books.
“GCI employs more than 2,000 people in communities across Alaska and we make local hiring a priority,” said Joe Wahl, Chief Human Resources Officer. “We feel strongly that Alaska must grow and retain a strong, competitive workforce so that industry can grow and the economy can thrive. We hope this scholarship program can help today’s students become tomorrow’s engineers, software designers, entrepreneurs and community leaders.”
The GCI scholarship application includes information about the student’s academic and work history, a short essay question, and a brief questionnaire to be filled out by the student’s high school or college counselor or advisor, an instructor, or a work supervisor.
The scholarship application period begins April 1, 2018. Applications must be received by April 30, 2018.
The GCI scholarship program is a revitalization of the long-standing UUI scholarship program, which was supported by GCI for 10 years. Over the past decade, GCI has awarded $2.6 million in scholarship funds to hundreds of Alaska students attending accredited colleges and vocational/trade schools.
