ANCHORAGE—The third phase of a multi-year construction project to replace trail bridges will begin on the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail on Monday, October 15, 2018. The construction schedule will depend on weather conditions. Bridge will re-open for winter trail use after installation tentatively in January 2019 with surface paving to be completed in spring 2019.
The construction closure will start at the “Y” intersection of the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail and Lanie Fleischer Chester Creek Trail of the Westchester Lagoon on Monday, October 15th. Suggested detour routes through the neighborhood will be posted and available via the Parks website (see detour map here).
These closures require variable detours. Message signs will direct trail users to suggested detour routes for the bridge, as shown on map. Detour maps will be posted at all trail intersections and on the Parks & Recreation Facebook, Twitter and project webpage.
The trail bridges were constructed in the 1980s and have withstood over 30 years of heavy trail use. Funds for the replacement of these bridges have been secured through the 2018 Park Bond.
