Arctic Encounter Symposium Seattle Pleased to Announce U.S. Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska as Keynote Speaker
The Arctic Encounter Symposium is pleased to announce the confirmation of the Honorable Lisa Murkowski, United States Senator – Alaska, as a distinguished speaker at the Arctic Encounter Symposium taking place in Seattle on January 15-16, 2016.
“We are honored to welcome Senator Murkowski back to the 3rd annual Arctic Encounter Symposium as a keynote speaker in January. The Senator has been an annual participant and speaker since the Arctic Encounter was founded. "As a long-time leader in the formation of U.S. Arctic policy and a life-long Alaskan, Senator Murkowski offers an unparalleled perspective on Arctic Policy," said Rachel Kallander, Executive Director of the Arctic Encounter Symposium. “We are thrilled to have Senator Murkowski’s participation this year."
Senator Murkowski joined the U.S. Senate in 2002, becoming the first ever Alaskan-born Senator. She is only the 6th person to represent Alaska in the U.S. Senate and only the 32nd female U.S. Senator. As the chairman of the U.S. Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, as well as chairman of the Appropriations Subcommittee on the Interior and the Environment, Senator Murkowski wields tremendous power, especially over issues affecting Alaska and the Arctic.
Senator Murkowski also serves on the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee and the Senate Indian Affairs Committee. In early 2015, Senator Murkowski founded the U.S. Senate Arctic Caucus to further engage members across the United States on issues facing the Arctic and to develop solutions. Additionally, Senator Murkowski is a member of the standing committee for the Conference of Parliamentarians of the Arctic Region.
In addition to Senator Lisa Murkowski, a complete list of confirmed speakers for the upcoming Arctic Encounter Symposium events in both Paris and Seattle can be found online at www.ArcticEncounter.com.
