Appreciation event delivers thanks to members

Our annual Member Appreciation Reception was a hit with nearly 100 attendees turning out to join us aboard Holland America Line's Pacific flagship, ms Amsterdam, while it was docked at the Port of Anchorage for the day.

While on board, members enjoyed mingling over hors d'oeuvres and drinks, which was then followed by tours of the ship's common areas. In addition to Chamber members, we were pleased to welcome Senator Dan Sullivan's wife, Julie Sullivan and Governor Bill Sheffield.

A big THANK YOU to Holland America Group's Ralph Samuels and Allison Hovanec and CLIA's John Binkley and Lanie Downs for hosting and sponsoring a wonderful event.

The annual reception is our way to thank both long-standing and new Chamber members for all of their help and support throughout the year in promoting a healthy business environment in Alaska.

Input needed to reform marine highway system

For more than 50 years, state ferries have provided essential transportation services and statewide economic benefits. However, service levels and reliability have declined due to budget reductions and an aging fleet. The Alaska Marine Highway System (AMHS) Reform Project addresses a broad range of ferry operations, management, and governance issues, including the following questions:
  • What can be done to generate more operating revenue while still providing affordable service?
  • How can Alaska provide a more predictable and sustainable flow of necessary public funding to support the AMHS?
  • What operating efficiencies could be implemented to reduce or control costs while still providing essential levels of service?
  • In planning for the long-term sustainability of AMHS, how do we define "essential service" for the widely varying needs of the 33 communities served directly by the system?
Please visit amhsreform.com to join the project mailing list and provide feedback about the value of AMHS. The site will be regularly updated with meeting notices and project documents. The draft Phase Two report will be available in September, positioning AMHS for implementing budget and legislative changes in the upcoming year.
