USDA Grants Governor’s Request to Purchase Surplus Pink Salmon
September 3, 2014, Anchorage, Alaska – Governor Sean Parnell issued the following statement after learning the U.S. Department of Agriculture granted his request to purchase surplus canned Alaska pink salmon.
“The purchase of Alaska’s canned salmon achieves several goals: It corrects the inventory surplus, helps Alaska’s fishing families, and provides high-quality nutrition for food and assistance programs,” Governor Parnell said. “Alaska’s bounty of pink salmon will provide delicious and nourishing meals for hundreds of thousands of American families. I appreciate the effort of Senator Lisa Murkowski to make this purchase possible, which will benefit Alaska’s families.”
Governor Parnell wrote to Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack this summer, requesting the agency acquire the surplus inventory for food assistance programs, a move which will slow a price decline that threatened the 2014 pink salmon fishing season.
