SEARHC Dental in Juneau receives award from Alaska Head Start
JUNEAU, September 16, 2014 – SouthEast Alaska Regional Health Consortium (SEARHC) is pleased to announce that their Dental program in Juneau recently won the Alaska Head Start Association’s 2014 Corporate Award.
The SEARHC Dental program was nominated for the award by the Tlingit and Haida Head Start program for providing outstanding dental care for the children served by their Head Start program in Southeast Alaska. In the nomination letter, the organization’s Health and Nutrition Coordinator, Melissa Morgan singled out the Juneau dental pediatric team of Dr. Kim Hort and SEARHC’s Dental Health Aids, saying, among other things, that they have done “an amazing job of supporting our Tlingit and Haida Head Start Communities.” She added, “SEARHC Dental has provided us with our mutual goal of helping children and families form lifelong healthy habits.”
SEARHC Dental provides Dental Health Aides to all of the Tlingit and Haida Head Start classrooms one to two times a year, showing children the importance of eating healthy and brushing daily. They also provide dental education and assist with dental fluoride treatments and provide ongoing communication and information to staff and parents about the specific needs of children that may need follow-up dental care outside the classroom.
In addition to dental services, SEARHC Dental acts as a liaison for the Tlingit and Haida Head Start program’s Health Advisory Board, helping to identify children that need Head Start services, as well as recruiting and referring children directly to the program.
SEARHC is proud of the partnership with Head Start and looks forward to continuing their commitment to the people they serve.
