New fund helps museums manage their collections

Haines -  Museums challenged to manage their collections have a new source of assistance, with the launch today of the Collections Management Fund. The new fund was created by Rasmuson Foundation and will be managed by Museums Alaska, a statewide association. This year, $100,000 in grants will be available to museums and cultural centers in Alaska for collections management supplies and activities. The goal is to build capacity for managing collections through professional expertise, training, and conservation materials and supplies.

The deadline to submit grant applications is Thursday, October 31, 2013.

Applicants must be 501(c)(3) nonprofit, government, tribal entities or equivalent organizations that hold collections in the public trust, such as a museum or cultural center. Small, rural-based organizations are encouraged to apply. Preference will be given to projects that are collaborative or cooperative in nature. Emergency conservation projects will be given priority. Membership in Museums Alaska is encouraged but not required.

Complete guidelines and application form are available from the links below on Museums Alaska’s website.

The new Collections Management Fund builds on the success of the Art Acquisition Fund. Since 2003, the Art Acquisition Fund has provided $1,596,045 to Alaska museums and culture centers for purchase of 897 works by 463 Alaska artists. See an online gallery of that work here.
