Coastal Trail Celebration today, 5:30pm
7 mile Coastal Trail Renovation ends with Costume Parade & Celebration
ANCHORAGE, Alaska, Thursday September 26th, 2013. 5:30pm Parade from Elderberry Park (1297 West 5th Ave) to Westchester Lagoon Playground (1284 West 15th Ave): Trail lovers have something to celebrate before snowfall. The Tony Knowles resurfacing project is near completion and we think a costume parade is in order!
Please join us at Elderberry Park at 5:30 pm with the Alaska Community Concert Band and families in costume as we open our beloved trail, and lead a parade to the Playground at Westchester Lagoon. Walk, bike, handcycle, rollerblade, stroller, skip... the resulting celebration at Westchester Lagoon at 5:45 pm will include Wheel Good Food, info booths, giveaways and a DJ and playground fun.
This seven mile resurfacing project was funded by the voters of Anchorage through a municipal bond, as well as by the Alaska State Legislature through a $1 million contribution to the Anchorage Park Foundation. The Rasmuson Foundation also made contributions to APF to make the project shovel-ready this summer.
The contractors are still working on the trail along Phase 1A (past Pt. Woronzof and the AWWU facility). The trail is open from 2nd Avenue all the way to Hutson Drive, just south of Pt. Woronzof Park. Phase 1A is closed and will remain closed until the Sisson Bridge at mile post 6.6 is complete and the trail repairs have been made. There is no suggested detour around this phase, please plan your trips as out-and-back trips. We anticipate finishing on schedule by the end of October.
Hosted by the Anchorage Park Foundation, MOA Parks & Recreation Department, Bicycle Commuters of Anchorage, and Live.Work.Play.
