For a lighthearted and comical taste of what it’s really like to train for and run the Iditarod, visit the UAA bookstore on October 8 from 5-7 p.m. and pick up a copy of “Beyond Ophir: Confessions of an Iditarod Musher, An Alaska Odyssey.” Author Jim Lanier will be signing books and sharing Iditarod gear and his many awards. A sampling of trail food and drinks will be provided to further familiarize visitors with running the Iditarod. And for the animal lovers, Magnificent May, one of the Laniers’ beautiful sled dogs, will be on hand to entertain the crowd.
Jim Lanier, Iditarod musher, father, husband and so much more, has written and published this memoir of running the Iditarod over the past thirty-four years. The book contains a forward by Joe Runyan in which he refers to Lanier as “one of the Iditarod’s iconic characters.” Lanier has entered at least one race in each of the five calendar decades the Iditarod has been run and has never scratched. That’s quite a feat, and at a spry 73, he intends to carry it through into the next decade -- and beyond.
Local entertainer and Lanier friend Hurricane Dave Rush picked up a copy at the private book launch held in September and has this to say about it: “Can’t pry the book out of my wife’s hands, but she’s laughing a lot. I should have bought one more!”
A copy of the book can be ordered through Amazon, or you can get one from Lanier at the public book signing. Once again – UAA Bookstore Oct. 8, 5-7 PM.
