21st Annual Stand Down for Veterans in Need

(ANCHORAGE, Alaska) -The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities will host the 21st annual Stand Down for Veterans in Need Friday, October 4, 2013 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the North Terminal of Ted Stevens International Airport (ANC).

Coordinated by Stand Down, Inc., Stand Down for Veterans in Need provides an opportunity for homeless veterans and veterans in need to obtain a multitude of services without having to negotiate through formal channels and make numerous trips to various agencies throughout the city.  Several social services agencies from the community will be available to provide information on topics including, but not limited to, housing, social security, legal assistance, and IRS problems.  Services are also provided for general medical and vision screenings.  In addition, veterans will be able to secure haircuts, massages, and clothing. 

Free transportation will be provided by People Mover Bus #7A for veterans with VA identification cards.  In addition, Princess Cruises will provide shuttle service from Carrs Quality Center at Northway Mall and from the VA Domiciliary, located at 3001 C Street.

Stand Down, Inc. is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization.  It is a "community of Alaska citizens working with veterans, government and nonprofit agencies, businesses, and other citizen dedicated to assisting homeless veterans through providing a supportive encampment to connect veterans with services that can assist them with a hand up to break the cycle of homelessness while enhancing their self-esteem and sense of purpose." 

The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities oversees 254 airports, 11 ferries serving 35 communities, 5,619 miles of highway and 720 public facilities throughout the state of Alaska. The mission of the department is to Keep Alaska Moving through service and infrastructure.
