The Anchorage Schools Foundation grant cycle deadline is Oct. 15

The Anchorage Schools Foundation, a fund of The Alaska Community Foundation, announces that its fifth grant cycle is now open to applicants. ASF engages the community in a relationship with its public schools that creates more flexible funding and improves outcomes for Anchorage classrooms. The grant cycle is open to Anchorage school district professionals, including principals, teachers, nurses, and counselors. Grants will be awarded to Anchorage classrooms in order to enhance educational outcomes for a wide range of projects including classroom supplies, recreational equipment, books, technology, afterschool programs, and other needs as determined by school district employees and not supported by the school district.

The mission of ASF is to provide community and private funding to enhance the success of students in Anchorage classrooms. This mission is pursued through fundraising and grant making for innovative projects and needs as identified by teachers and other staff that work with students directly. ASF is a vital part of education in Anchorage. Like many hospitals and universities, which for decades have grown affiliated foundations to build scholarships, research, facilities, and innovation, the Anchorage School Foundation serves a similar role as a conduit to channel private philanthropic funds into classrooms. ASF is managed by a volunteer board of community advisors that prioritizes funding requests for projects not already supported by public funds to the school district. ASF’s assets are managed by The Alaska Community Foundation.

Past grant cycles by ASF have included funding for a broad array of exciting projects for the school district including funding for a rock climbing wall, audiobooks, skates, art class workboxes, a sewing machine, three dimensional math visual aids, a trail adoption and a digital projector. School professionals are encouraged to apply, and the deadline to apply for the current grant cycle is October 15, 2012 by 9:00 p.m.

Established in 1995, The Alaska Community Foundation has become a statewide platform for philanthropy. The foundation currently holds over $55 million for the benefit of Alaskans, granting approximately $5 million each year to charitable projects and nonprofit organizations across the state. ACF’s mission is to grow philanthropy and connect people who care with causes that matter. ACF helps individuals, organizations and communities create funds, that – like the Alaska Permanent Fund – provide financial resources to improve the quality of life in Alaska now and forever.
