September is Hunger Action Month

Anchorage– September is Hunger Action Month all across the United States. Food Bank of Alaska (FBA), in collaboration with a coalition of anti-hunger agencies, are joining Feeding America and a national network of more than 200 food banks in hosting a series of events during September to bring awareness to the fight against hunger in America.

Nearly 15% of Alaska’s population is now experiencing food insecurity and Alaska’s unique landscape brings even greater challenges to coping with an already complicated problem. FBA’s Executive Director, Susannah Morgan says, ““As a mother myself, I find it intolerable – gut-wrenchingly, heart-breaking intolerable – that tens of thousands of Alaskan kids may not get three nutritious meals today. We have to change that.”

FBA and our partners are asking everyone in the Great Land to speak out against hunger to bring attention to the 105,000 Alaskans struggling with consistent access to food as well as the agencies who work to help them. Whether by advocating, raising awareness, making donations, or volunteering, everyone has the chance to find the way that’s right for them to make a difference during Hunger Action Month.

Planned events include: Wednesdays throughout September: St. Francis House Food Pantry /UAF Cooperative Extension Cooking Demonstration @ Catholic Social Services, St. Francis House Wednesday, September 5: Hunger Action Month Kick off at Mayor Dan Sullivan’s weekly press briefing @ FBA Tuesday September 11, Anchorage Assembly Hunger Action Month Proclamation Tuesday, September 11, Port Users Food Drive Friday, September 14: United Way Day of Caring Food Drive @ Sears Mall Sunday, September 23: Crop Walk
