Welcome Back to the Classroom
School is back in full swing, with students from Pre-K to UA resuming their school year routines. This time of year always inspires and reminds me of the important role quality education plays in Alaska. And of course, please be aware of the increase in vehicle and foot traffic around schools and bus stops. Let’s keep our students safe this school year.
Please remember to slow down and beware for flashing yellow lights to keep our kids safe this school year. School zones are marked at 20 miles an hour for safety.
Working Hard For Fairbanks North Star Borough School District
As many of you know, I am the product of the first-rate education system in Fairbanks. Now, as a state legislator and member of the House Education Committee, I am proud to continue working hard to ensure all Alaskan students are able to have an enriched education.
We were able to secure millions of new dollars for the Fairbanks North Star Borough school district this year. Projects that received funding include: technology upgrades, school improvements, school gardens and forward funds for our valued teachers and staff. This upcoming legislative session I will once again look at long term funding for education and continue to strive for excellence within Alaska’s education system.
Attend an Event and Show Your Support
This is a perfect time to recognize the parents, teachers and staff that work so hard to ensure the success of our children. Get to know your student’s teacher. Learning and teaching go beyond the classroom; it begins with active and engaged parents and family members. And of course, I encourage everyone to stay involved with school activities this fall. Make sure to check out the Fairbanks North Star Borough School Calendar or head over to the UAF Events Calendar to follow your favorite Nanooks activities.
And if you have little ones at home I encourage you attend the Alyeska Best Beginnings Family Fair this Saturday, September 15th at the Pioneer Park Civic Center from 11:00am – 3:00pm. This free event will offer health screenings for children 0 – 8, games, prizes, and resources for the entire family. I will hope to see many familiar faces there!
Important Notice to Families with College-Age Students
The 2012-2013 Alaska Performance Scholarship (APS) application window has been extended to December 14, 2012. The APS is a merit-based scholarship offered to Alaskan students who meet the requirements and plan to attend post-secondary school in Alaska. If you think this opportunity may be applicable to your family, make sure to check out the information here.
Final Note: Senate Energy Working Group Fuel Price Hearing
I want to thank everyone who listened, attended or testified at the Senate Energy Working Group Fuel Price Hearing at the Noel Wien Library on September 10th. Public input will continue to be a critical factor in the state’s efforts to find solutions to our high costs of energy. Please continue to share your ideas and concerns with me and other members of the legislature. If you missed the hearing, or would like to make copies of the materials presented, click here to download the presentations.
Please remember, my office is always open for you to stop by, call or email.
