ANCHORAGE-Senator Kevin Meyer, R-South Anchorage, is proud to announce that a new artificial turf field will be dedicated at Service High School in Anchorage on Friday, September 7th.  The dedication will begin at 1p.m. in the Service High School Gymnasium and will move outside for a brief ball tossing and kicking ceremony, if weather permits.

“One of my highest priorities as a legislator is making sure our children get the resources they need to thrive later in life,” said Senator Meyer.  “This field provides a great place for our students to participate in sports and encourages youth fitness, teamwork and a sense of school pride.  These are key building blocks that help our kids succeed in school.”

Senator Meyer worked alongside school leaders to secure the funding for the $2.1 million artificial turf field which replaced a natural grass field that required a substantial amount of ongoing maintenance each year including fertilizing, mowing, watering, reseeding, and game line striping.

“Because the natural grass was very difficult and expensive to maintain, the field became almost impossible to use during certain times of the year,” said Senator Meyer.   “Replacing the grass provides a high quality, safe, low maintenance field that makes it easier to use throughout the year by students, staff, and the community.”

Two representatives from each of the sports that will use the field, including football, soccer, flag football, track, cross country running, and skiing will help dedicate the field.

“I believe that athletics provide a very important cornerstone in the education of our kids,” said Senator Meyer.  “My daughter played soccer at Service High School.   It is something that helped shape who she is today.  That kind of educational tool is priceless and that’s why this new field is so important for students and families in South Anchorage.”
