Murkowski Sharing Alaskan Ideas at Arctic Parliamentarian Conference
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator Murkowski is participating in the 10th Conference of Parliamentarians of the Arctic Region this week, being held in Reykjavik, Iceland – including a presentation focused on “Economic Opportunities in the Arctic.” In addition to hearing of the trends and latest approaches being used by other Arctic nations, Murkowski will use this occasion to educate the representatives about emerging opportunities in resource development, cargo shipping and tourism for Alaskans and the entire region.
“It’s an opportunity for legislators from different parliaments and different governments of the eight Arctic nations to come together and address issues of mutual concern. Whether it’s Arctic governance, the health of our indigenous people, resource opportunities, environmental issues – it will be an important week as we gather to discuss the ever-evolving Arctic …
“It will be my first trip to Iceland and to see for myself how they as a nation have become almost entirely independent of outside energy sources. They rely on geothermal and hydro for just about all of their energy needs, and have been able to utilize that to the benefit of their country and their economy. I’m looking forward to learning lots and coming back to share with Alaskans.”
