Murkowski Shares Observations After Mat-Su/Kenai Flood Survey

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator Lisa Murkowski concluded her survey of Alaska’s flood- and windstorm-impacted communities in the Mat-Su Valley and the Kenai Peninsula – joining with Alaska state disaster official John Madden to assess the state and local response.  From the banks of an extremely high Kenai River, Senator Murkowski spoke to Alaskans about what she’d seen.  (Video below)

“This is a spot where our family has fished for many summers consecutively.  My kids would be down on those steps there fishing when they were little bits of boys … Another thing that is interesting is all the restoration work that been done on the banks of the Kenai over the years as they work to restore and retain the banks.  These small willows should be well above water, it’s what has helped to stabilize the banks over the years.  This will be a real test of the commitment of the people here on the Kenai in terms of how well this withstands these waters.  This prolonged period of high fast moving water is a tough situation right now.  We are continuing the tour, but right now here in the Big Eddy area on the Kenai River, it’s really wet.”
