Begich Comments on Shell’s Revised Drilling Plan
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Mark Begich today made the following statement after Shell announced it is revising its plans for the 2012-2012 exploration program, forgoing drilling into hydrocarbon zones this year:
“I am disappointed that Shell will not be able to complete exploration wells this season,” Begich said. “Yet safety comes first and Shell’s decision to limit its program to only top holes is the right move.
“We shouldn’t lose sight of the fact that both Shell and federal agencies are laying a solid foundation for continued OCS exploration next summer and beyond. We have seen a fleet of exploration ships and response equipment operate safely and responsibly off our northern coast for the first time in a generation.”
