Alaska Senators Hold Hearing on Fuel Pricing and Interior Energy Costs

FAIRBANKS- The Senate Energy Working Group will hold a fuel price hearing on Monday, September 10, from 1:00pm-4:30pm, at Noel Wien Library in Fairbanks.  Public testimony will be taken from 5:30pm-7:00pm.

The meeting will be chaired by Senator Joe Thomas (Fairbanks) and will include Senator Lyman Hoffman (Bethel) and Senator Bill Wielechowski (Anchorage).  The State Senate created the Energy Working Group last spring to examine the factors that determine fuel prices in Alaska and seek ways to reduce prices paid by residents and businesses.  Monday’s meeting will focus on Interior Alaska.

During the hearing, the Senate Energy Working Group will continue its investigation into how prices of fuel oil, gasoline, diesel, jet fuel and other fuels are set, and the impact on those prices of state royalty oil, other feed stock, transportation, power and other costs associated with production and distribution.  In addition, testimony will discuss the impact of fuel prices on consumers, businesses, commercial and industrial development.

The hearing will bring together key stakeholders, including refiners, distributors, state agencies, consumers, and market experts to discuss the dynamics of fuel prices.  Speakers will include James Tangaro (Vice President, Kenai Refinery, Tesoro Alaska Company), Bill Barron (Director of the Division of Oil and Gas in the Department of Natural Resources), Larry Persily (Federal Coordinator of Alaska Natural Gas Transportation Projects) as well as others involved with fuel distribution and use.   The complete agenda is attached.

“The Energy Working Group is meeting in Fairbanks because Interior Alaska, including rural villages, is severely impacted by high fuel prices,” said co-chairman Senator Joe Thomas, “The Fairbanks area also has two oil refineries and residents with particular expertise and experience to share.  This is an important opportunity for input from those who are most familiar with the issues.”

Members of the public who are interested in learning more about fuel pricing in Alaska are encouraged to attend the hearing from 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm and to provide public comment at 5:30 pm.  This meeting will be broadcast on http://alaskalegislature.tv/.
