Alaska Regional Orthopedic Department Earns Gold Seal of Approval

Anchorage, AK (October 2, 2012) – Alaska Regional Hospital’s Orthopedic & Spine Center has earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval™ for its hip and knee replacement programs by demonstrating compliance with the Commission’s national standards for healthcare quality and safety in disease-specific care. The certification recognizes Alaska Regional’s dedication to continuous compliance with The Joint Commission’s state-of-the-art standards.

The hospital underwent a rigorous on-site survey this month. A team of Joint Commission surveyors evaluated the program for compliance with standards of care specific to the needs of patients and families, including infection prevention and control, leadership, and medication management.

"With Joint Commission certification, we are demonstrating the significant investment that we make in patient care every day,” Annie Holt, Alaska Regional CEO, said. “Achieving Joint Commission certification for our hip and knee replacement programs is a major step toward maintaining excellence and continually improving the care we provide.”

The Joint Commission’s Certification Program is designed to evaluate clinical programs across the continuum of care. Certification requirements address three core areas: compliance with consensus-based national standards; effective use of evidence-based clinical practice guidelines to manage and optimize care; and an organized approach to performance measurement and improvement activities.

The Joint Commission evaluates and accredits more than 19,000 healthcare organizations and programs in the United States, including more than 10,300 hospitals and home care organizations, and more than 6,500 other healthcare organizations that provide long-term care, behavioral health care, laboratory and ambulatory care services. An independent, not-for-profit organization, The Joint Commission is the nation's oldest and largest standard setting and accrediting body in healthcare.
