Walden Point Road Designated Scenic Byway

September 13, 2011, Juneau, Alaska --The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) designated Walden Point Road located in Metlakatla as a state scenic byway on August 24, 2011. A ribbon cutting ceremony was held on August 26, 2011.

The 14-mile corridor is located in the Annette Island Reserve, the only Native reservation in Alaska. Walden Point Road has a realistic potential for being an outdoor enthusiast’s utopia, particularly for hikers, and brings a significant number of tourists and new jobs, as well as incubating new small businesses within the Metlakatla Indian Community.

“This region is full of rich history and culture. It also showcases the only Native reservation in Alaska. The history, natural abundance and recreational opportunities sets this corridor apart and makes it a unique place,” said DOT&PF Commissioner Marc Luiken.

Alaska’s Scenic Byway designation provides resources to the byway communities to create unique travel experiences and enhance local quality of life through efforts to preserve, protect, interpret, and promote the qualities of the designated scenic byway.
