Governor Honors Service of Fallen Fort Wainwright Soldiers
September 22, 2011, Juneau, Alaska – Governor Sean Parnell offered his condolences to the family and friends of two soldiers from Fort Wainwright who were killed in combat.
Specialist Ryan J. Cook died from injuries sustained when insurgents attacked his unit using an improvised explosive device while on a dismounted patrol. Specialist Cook was a member of the 3rd Battalion, 21st Infantry Regiment, 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division at Fort Wainwright.
Sergeant Timothy D. Sayne died of injuries suffered when insurgents attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 5th Squadron, 1st Cavalry Regiment, 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division at Fort Wainwright.
"Specialist Cook had already survived one injury while on duty, and he could have returned home, but this true hero chose another mission. Sergeant Sayne became the second Wabash Valley, Illinois man of valor to give his life for our country within just a few weeks,” Governor Parnell said.
"These soldiers will be remembered for their noble and selfless service to our country. Sandy and I join all Alaskans in offering our sincerest condolences to the families. We will keep them in our thoughts and prayers as they mourn the loss of these men.”
