Business Wire Seattle Celebrating Company’s 50th Anniversary

Seattle Mayor Michael McGinn Recognizes Business Wire's 50th Anniversary and 35 years in Seattle

SEATTLE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Business Wire will celebrate its 50th anniversary on October 2nd. Mayor Michael McGinn sent a letter of recognition to Business Wire Seattle acknowledging Business Wire's 50th anniversary along with its 35 years of being active in Seattle's business community.

"I am honored that Mayor McGinn has honored Business Wire with an official proclamation marking our Golden Anniversary"

"As the global leader in press release distribution and regulatory disclosure, Business Wire has served thousands of professional communicators with 50 years of service, dedication and innovation," stated McGinn's letter.

To commemorate the anniversary, Business Wire's Seattle bureau will be having a private office celebration and is also planning a public celebration with clients and media in late October. Additionally, as part of the Business Wire Gives Back 2011 initiative, Seattle employees will be volunteering in their local communities on company time.

"I am honored that Mayor McGinn has honored Business Wire with an official proclamation marking our Golden Anniversary," said Business Wire Chairman and CEO Cathy Baron Tamraz. "We take pride in knowing that Business Wire has been recognized with proclamations by the mayors in many of the markets we conduct business. It is truly an historic moment for our company."

Opening in 1976, Business Wire Seattle was one of the first satellite offices. During the earlier years, releases were received via fax or dictation (and one time printed on a t-shirt!) and then had to be hand-typed. Today, editors receive all releases through a secure, electronic system, and on occasion some of those are written entirely on a mobile phone. Seattle began with one editor and one salesperson. Now the office is home to a four-person sales team, a media relations specialist, ten editors in the newsroom and Business Wire's editorial process development manager.

Business Wire was founded by Lorry I. Lokey in San Francisco on October 2, 1961, and the Business Wire Seattle office opened 15 years later in 1976 in The Tower Building at 7th and Olive Street. Today the office is located in the Washington State Convention Center office tower and employees there enjoy a picture-worthy view of Seattle landmark the Space Needle. Business Wire Seattle works with public and private organizations in Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington.
