ASD seeks board approval to launch K-8 math curriculum review this spring
At the Monday, October 3 Anchorage School Board meeting, district administration will recommend that the board authorize a comprehensive review of the district's K-8 math curriculum to begin after the State Board of Education and Early Development adopts new content and performance standards for math in the spring. If approved, the review will kick off in November with a series of community meetings to identify public and staff concerns regarding the current K-8 program.
In the spring, elementary and middle school curriculum review committees will be appointed to develop and carry out the review. These committees will be made up of both staff and community members, including teacher experts, teachers, principals, various advisory committee members and parents. Students will be included where appropriate. A recommendation on the districtwide math curriculum will be made to the school board after the first quarter of the 2012-2013 school year.
This review comes in response to mixed public sentiment about the district's current math curriculum. It is separate from the K-8 math implementation plan review that was conducted last year and presented last spring by the Council of the Great City Schools. That review focused not on whether the district should change the current curriculum, but on how effectively the district had implemented its current math program.
The Alaska Department of Education and Early Development is currently reviewing and updating the statewide content and performance standards for mathematics. The district's curriculum review is timed to begin within six weeks of the anticipated spring release of the new state standards. The timing should also enable the district to consider curriculum, textbooks, and assessments, that are created to align with the national common core standards.
