Sparks Fly Between Alaska and Federal Government
Today's report. With a couple days' notice Secretary Ken Salazar flew to Alaska's North Slope to have a 'town meeting' in Barrow yesterday. We've never seen such bizarre behavior by a federal cabinet member in our 40 years on the scene. Today, Secretary Salazar holds a press conference in Anchorage. Yesterday, Governor Sean Parnell took off the gloves and went on the offense to petition the National Marine Fisheries Service to remove an illogical and harmful Endangered Species Act protection for Southeast Alaska's healthy Steller sea lion population. We also note a little Mackenzie Valley Pipeline dissention.
Yesterday's report. House Special Committee on Energy Chairman Charisse Millett held a hearing on Enstar Natural Gas' proposed gas storage facility. The crowded room heard testimony from Chairmen of the Regulatory Commission of Alaska, the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission, Alaska's Oil and Gas Director, and Enstar. Senate Energy Committee Chairman Lesil McGuire participated along with House Members Mike Hawker, Kyle Johansen, Craig Johnson, Pete Petersen and Chris Tuck.
