Senator Murkowski Addresses Third Party RunDecision on Write-in Candidacy to come Friday
Anchorage, AK- Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) today confirmed that she has not sought the Libertarian party's nomination in the November election.
"Everyday Alaskans from all walks of life have approached me urging that I stay in the race. First and foremost I want to thank them for their outpouring of support. Advisors and friends had urged me to find a way to get my name printed on the ballot at all costs. However, after meeting with the Libertarian candidate last week and considering that option, I cannot in good conscience seek the Libertarian nomination. As disappointed as I am in the outcome of the Primary and my belief that the Alaska Republican Party was hijacked by the Tea Party Express, an outside extremist group, I am not going to quit my party. I will not wrap myself in the flag of another political party for the sake of election at any cost."
Alaskans continue to contact the campaign and Senator Murkowski personally urging her to mount a write-in campaign.
"I recognize that not seeking the Libertarian's position on the ballot leaves me with the more difficult task of running a write-in campaign should I decide to continue in the race. I will continue to seek advice from my fellow Alaskans about what is best for the state's future and announce a decision by Friday."
Senator Murkowski returned to Washington this morning for official business.
"On Thursday the Senate Appropriations Committee begins mark-up of legislation critical to Alaska. Specifically, the Defense Appropriations bill provides critical funding to the men and women serving in Alaska and vital funding for Alaska's bases like Fort Richardson, Fort Wainwright, Elmendorf, Eielson, and the missile defense facilities at Fort Greely. Finally, the bill contains the funding for our brave soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines serving in Afghanistan, Iraq, and around the world."
