Rep. Young Comments On Relief Funds For Yukon Fishermen
Washington, D.C. - Alaskan Congressman Don Young released the following statement today following the announcement of $5 million in federal disaster relief from the U.S. Department of Commerce to the Pacific States Marine Fisheries Commission to assist with the recovery of fishing communities and fisheries from a commercial fishery failure in the Yukon River Chinook salmon fishery:
"The weak returns of king salmon in the Yukon River have proved devastating to the commercial and subsistence fishermen in that area. The decision by Secretary Locke to declare it a disaster recognized the suffering by Alaskans in this region caused by the low returns over the past two years. I commend Senator Murkowski for her work in securing this money in the Senate and ensuring that the families that depend on healthy runs of King Salmon will have some relief after the past few difficult years."
