McHugh Trail Temporary Closure Bears Feeding on a Kill
(Anchorage, AK) – Chugach State Park managers have temporarily closed the McHugh-Rabbit Lakes Trail between McHugh Creek and McHugh Lake due to a report of bears feeding on a kill.
A park visitor said that his dogs alerted on a pair of bears feeding on a carcass between the 4 and 5 mile trail markers. The bears retreated on seeing the hiker and dogs. Park staff will inspect the kill site and evaluate the need for a closure within the next several days.
Warning notifications are posted at the trailhead.
For further information, please contact the Chugach State Park Headquarters office at 345-5014.
Trail closures of this type are typically lifted after the carcass has been consumed, which is usually a process of several days to a week.
