The Mountain View community has been working to restore a library to the
neighborhood since the original library was closed in 1988. The new building is on
target for Silver level LEED© green building certification and is one of the first of this
kind in Anchorage. The new library will also be a cultural resource center that reflects
the diversity of the surrounding community, with the languages of the community
incorporated in the collection and building artwork.
The Mountain View renovation completes phase one of the Anchorage Library
Renewal Initiative-the largest investment in our public libraries in more than twenty
years. The Municipality and Anchorage Library Foundation have raised in excess of
$14M in private, state, federal and bond funds to renovate four branch libraries.
Family programs will take place throughout the day, including the opening ceremony
from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., where Mayor Sullivan will recognize community leaders,
donors and special guest speaker, Sari Feldman. Ms. Feldman is the outgoing Public
Library Association President and Executive Director of the highly-rated Cuyahoga
County (Cleveland, Ohio) Public Library.
Major funding for the project was provided by the Rasmuson Foundation; BP; U.S.
Department of Housing and Urban Development; the State of Alaska; Citizens of
Anchorage (bond funds); the Gottstein Family; the Atwood Foundation; and Friends
of the Library.
