Free Prescription Drug Disposal This Saturday

City part of a nationwide effort to properly dispose of excess Rx drugs in home medicine cabinets

The Municipality of Anchorage, through its participation in the Alaska Safe Medicine Alliance, encourages local residents
to participate in the first ever Drug Enforcement Administration’s National Prescription Drug Take-back Day this Saturday,
September 25.

Prescription drugs can be turned over for proper disposal on Saturday, September 25th from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the
Abbot, Muldoon, and Northern Lights Fred Meyer stores and at the Alaska Native Medical Center. The service is
free of charge and anonymous.

Prescriptions that sit unused in home medicine cabinets are highly susceptible to misuse and abuse. Studies have shown
that majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from friends and family and often from home medicine cabinets. A
large number of prescriptions in a home can also lead to accidental misuse and dangerous drug interactions, especially
among senior citizens. Proper disposal of pharmaceuticals helps keep our environment healthy and safe.

“Anchorage, by taking part in this nation wide event, is demonstrating our community’s commitment to public safety and
public health” said Mayor Dan Sullivan. “By ridding our cabinets of unused medications, we are taking action against drug
misuse and abuse.”

“Since 2005, prescription drug abuse rates have risen sevenfold in our state,” noted Diane Ingle, Director of the Municipal
Department of Health and Human Services. “We hope Anchorage families will take advantage of this unique opportunity
to makes their homes and local environment a safer place.

The Alaska Safe Medical Alliance is comprised of the Alaska DEA, several city, borough, and state agencies, businesses,
and non profit agencies. For more information on this event, contact Mary Sullivan, Program Manager of the Seniors
