Alaska One of Six Six States to Add Construction Jobs Between 2009 & 2010

Alaska one of six six states to add construction jobs between July 2009 & 2010 according to the Associated General Contractors of America. Ken Simonson, the association's chief economist said that the largest year-over-year increase was in Kansas, where construction employment rose 6.9 percent (4,000 jobs), followed by New Hampshire (5.0 percent, 1,100 jobs); Oklahoma (1,900 jobs, 2.8 percent); West Virginia (2.4 percent, 800 jobs); Alaska (1.9 percent, 300 jobs); and Arkansas (1.5 percent, 800 jobs). The analysis was based on recently released U.S. Department of Labor numbers. The study also noted that nationwide Twenty-six states added construction jobs in July 2010 compared to 19 in June 2010. AIDEA Offers New Low Cost Business Expansion Financing

Recently, the Alaska Industrial Development and Export Authority requested applications for projects that could use Recovery Zone Facility Bonds. These bonds are a new type of tax-exempt private activity bond that significantly broadens financing opportunities for business borrowers for funding of new capital expenditure projects and equipment.

AIDEA received $162 million in applications before the September 1, 2010 deadline with $135 million available for business. Applications were mostly for small business, the intended recipients of the bonds with authorizations to be made by mid-September. These projects are expected to create approximately 250 jobs.

Eligible uses of RZFB funds include:

1. Purchase of capital expenditures on property such as new construction, reconstruction, renovation and equipment located in a designated Recovery Zone;

2. Issuance expenses up to 2% of the proceeds.

AEDC CEO & President Featured in Petroleum News

In a recent Petroleum News Article Bill Popp, President and CEO of AEDC says state should take a broad view of development project priorities and facilitate progress on multiple fronts.
According to Popp, "Alaska has weathered the economic recession relatively unscathed but needs to get down to business to assure a successful economic future."

The article focuses on the importance of the oil industry to the economy of Anchorage and Alaska as well as the need for mineral and gas exploration.  Popp also describes the harm that delay after delay for projects has on the viability of the projects as well as the long-term economic health of Alaska.  The full article is available in the August 15, 2010 issue of Petroleum news.

Anchorage Unemployment Continues to Fall

AEDC Monthly Employment and Unemployment Report

Using data reported each month by the State of Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development, AEDC is now providing monthly updates on key employment and unemployment trends:
· YTD trends in employment for key sectors of the Anchorage and Alaska economy

· Year-to-year comparisons of employment data on a monthly and quarterly basis

· YTD trends in unemployment for Anchorage, the Mat-Su, Kenai Peninsula and Southcentral as a region


This data provides a detailed snapshot of these indicators and offers a clearer perspective on employment and unemployment trends than can be offered in brief media stories. The report will be posted to the "Reports" section of the AEDC website every month and look for an update in the Monthly E-news.

With data provided by Connect Alaska, AEDC has added a broadband overlay to AnchorageProspector.com. The new layer allows users to see if particular properties have broadband access and is intended to offer more broadband information in the future.
