‘All About Cats - Pets & People Partnering for Success’

Shelter Cat Enrichment Program for young people with disabilities is a hit!

The Stone Soup Group (SSG) and the Anchorage Animal Care and Control Center (AACCC)
have been offering an "All About Cats" class for people with special needs. The class aims to
inform students about cats - introducing themselves to a cat, handling, grooming and
playing with them, and identifying their colors, behaviors and habits. After SSG and AACCC
partnered on the very successful shelter dog training classes, a cat class was suggested. The
cat class was meant as additional background and training for people who may go on to
volunteer with cats at AACCC, but they are under no obligation to do so.

Co-teacher Sharon Ballenger says "A class that helps people learn more about cats and
appreciate their qualities, as well as offering cats the opportunity to get out and show their
stuff is a win-win situation." Classes are offered every other Tuesday from 5:30 until 6, but may
run longer especially when a participant has a warm, furry feline lap-sitter in place!

The public is invited to attend the next "All About Cats" class and see the participants, as
well as their feline lap warmers, in action!
