Sen. Begich Statement on the Death of Former Mayor George Sullivan
U.S. Sen. Mark Begich released the following statement on the death of former Anchorage mayor George Sullivan:
"It is with sadness that Deborah and I learned last night of the death of George Sullivan.
"Former Mayor Sullivan served our country honorably in the U.S. Army, had a distinguished career of public service in Alaska, he was a true gentleman, and I considered him a friend and a mentor. In fact, George helped me get my start in public service by appointing me to the city's Youth Commission.
"Over the years, George and I called on each other to talk about city matters or important issues facing our state and he was a frequent visitor to my City Hall office to advocate for the city's senior citizens and other good causes. He always offered solid advice and wisdom that I took to heart.
"George's presence in Alaska will be greatly missed. Deborah and I offer our prayers and condolences to the entire Sullivan family."
