Opening Reception for Smithsonian Exhibition New Harmonies: A Celebration of American Roots Music

WASILLA, Alaska - The Smithsonian is in Wasilla!  We invite you to attend the opening reception for New Harmonies: A Celebration of American Roots Music, Saturday, September 12, 2009 at the Dorothy G. Page Museum in Wasilla.  This event features live music, free admission to the museum and exhibition, as well as children's activities.  The event begins at 10:00 am and continues through 4:00 pm.

New Harmonies examines the progression of American roots music, and explains how our unique sound reveals the American story - peoples reshaping themselves in a new and changing world.  Through a selection of photographs, recordings, instruments and interactive components, this exhibition introduces visitors to the broad range of musical styles and traditions that mirror our national diversity.

Join us for live musical performances by Northern Lights Brass from the Air Force Band of the Pacific, and local groups Mountain Waxwings and Patricia and Greg Wade of Little Blue Suitcase.  An early jam session begins at 10 am.  Bring your instrument and jam with other musicians.  Children's activities include the rock 'n' roll duck pond, music themed reading corner and various music related crafts.

New Harmonies is on display now through October 30, 2009.  The Dorothy G. Page Museum is located at 323 N. Main Street in Wasilla, next to the Wasilla Public Library.  We are open Monday through Saturday 9 am - 5 pm.  For more information call (907) 373-9071 or email museum@ci.wasilla.ak.us or visit us online at www.cityofwasilla.com/museum.
