IBEW Rejects Anchorage Assembly Attorney Opinion Regarding Union Contracts

IBEW Rejects Anchorage Assembly Attorney Opinion Regarding Union Contracts

Sept. 24, 2009

(ANCHORAGE, AK)—Larry Bell, Business Manager of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 1547, expressed disappointment in, and disagreement with, the opinion issued by Walker & Levesque.

“Candidly, we feel like we’re caught in the crossfire of an old political battle on the Assembly.  Anchorage now needs steady leadership able to govern the city in both good times and bad.  The endless distractions by Assemblyman Starr are counterproductive to this purpose.  Mr. Starr exercised his opinion when the contracts were voted on and was in the minority.

We negotiated our contract in good faith, and there has never been any valid claim otherwise.  Our agreement was approved by the Assembly through the normal public hearing process with ample legislative input and public discussion.  We believe a deal is a deal and expect the Municipality will live up to its end of the bargain and honor these contracts.  Our members show up every day ready to work, demonstrating their commitment to this agreement and the citizens of Anchorage.

IBEW Local 1547 represents more than 320 employees at the Municipality of Anchorage and Municipal Light and Power.
