Alaska Legislators Honor Hawaii Senator Daniel Inouye

(Anchorage) - A Hawaii senator has been honored by Alaska lawmakers for service to the 49th State.

United States Senator Daniel Inouye received an award from legislators and a few, prominent Alaskans earlier this week in
Washington, D.C., to thank him for help in efforts to open the coastal plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil development,
supporting a national missile defense system, opposing plans to shut down Eielson Air Force Base, and approving reparations for Aleuts who, along with Japanese-Americans, suffered in federal internment camps during World War II.

Earlier this year, the Alaska Legislature unanimously approved a measure to have Inouye's 85th birthday, September 7, 2009, proclaimed as Senator Daniel Inouye Day.
