Governor Parnell Takes Fiscally Conservative Approach to Budget
Focus on Core Services and Results for Alaskans
ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Governor Sean Parnell has directed state government budget efforts to focus on measurable results for Alaskans. The governor is using results-based budgeting to prioritize program funding so Alaskans can clearly identify the goods and services they receive from the investment of state dollars.
"I am committed to a fiscally responsible budget that focuses on my top two priorities: positioning Alaska for economic growth and strengthening families," Governor Parnell said. "Controlling spending, living within our means, and saving for the future continue to be key components of our fiscal policy."
During their initial meetings with the governor, commissioners have been reviewing their current budgets, performance framework, and issues and challenges in FY2011. They are also looking for opportunities for collaboration among state agencies to meet the needs of Alaskans while saving state dollars.
"More money doesn't necessarily mean better results," Governor Parnell said. "If we look closely at what's working, while taking a new approach to programs that aren't achieving the goals we've set, we can assure Alaskans that state government dollars are being spent wisely."
The FY2011 proposed budget is due to the Legislature by December 15, 2009.
