Governor Parnell Mourns Fallen Fort Richardson Soldiers
September 10, 2009, ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Governor Sean Parnell today offered his condolences to the families of three Fort Richardson soldiers who died this week while serving their country in Iraq. The soldiers were assigned to the 545th Military Police Company, Arctic Military Police Battalion, Fort Richardson.
"These soldiers died defending freedom and democracy," Governor Parnell said. "They will be remembered for their courage and devotion. Sandy and I join Alaskans in offering our condolences to the families and friends of these fine young men. Our thoughts and prayers are with their families and fellow soldiers."
Staff Sergeant Shannon M. Smith, 31, of Ohio; Private First Class Thomas F. Lyons, 20, of Fernley, Nevada; and Private First Class Zachary T. Myers, 21, of Delaware, Ohio, were killed Tuesday when an improvised explosive device detonated near their vehicle.
A state flag, along with a letter of condolence, will be sent to each of the families to honor these soldiers.
