Volunteers Worked Side-By-Side With Others During Annual Local Event
ANCHORAGE, Alaska, Sept. 10, 2009 — Employees of AT&T* Alaska lent a helping hand to help improve our community as they participated in the United Way Day of Caring, one of the largest corporate volunteer events in Anchorage. Held on Sept. 9, the Day of Caring was an opportunity for volunteers to donate several hours, materials or goods to a special Anchorage project.
This year, AT&T assisted Passage House, Covenant House Alaska’s transitional living program for young women who are pregnant or parenting. Passage House provides a safe place to live for young mothers and their children, as they gain skills and resources to become productive, successful, independent adults who can care for themselves and their families.
“As a company that is committed to making our community better for everyone, AT&T was happy to devote time and energy to make this goal a reality,” said Mike Felix, president, AT&T Alaska. “The United Way’s Day of Caring was the perfect opportunity for our employees to reach out to others, and Passage House is a worthy program in so many ways. We were pleased to join them and The United Way to truly make it a Day of Caring.”
Nearly 700 volunteers from 25 corporate partners participated in last year’s Day of Caring, completing more than 50 service projects in one day. Past projects have included stabilizing a walkway for a senior's home and revitalizing a playground at a daycare.
In addition to teaching positive parenting skills, Passage House also provides education about child safety, money management, food preparation and more, as well as additional mentor programs.
