Poll: Voters fear ethanol mandates will damage engines, raise costs
WASHINGTON, October 2, 2013 – Seventy-seven percent of likely voters say they are concerned that ethanol blends above a 10 percent level – mandated under the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) – can cause severe damage to car engines and fuel system components, according to a Harris Interactive poll released by the American Petroleum Institute (API).
“America’s energy-from-shale revolution has made the RFS an obsolete relic of our country’s decades long era of energy scarcity,” API Downstream Group Director Bob Greco told reporters during a news conference call. “It makes little sense to keep pushing a solution to fix a problem that no longer exists, especially when it could harm consumers and devastate our economy.”
Sixty-nine percent of voters say that using more corn for ethanol production could increase consumer prices for groceries due to the reduction in the corn supply for food, food products and animal feed, according to the poll. Sixty-six percent say that federal government regulations could drive up the cost of gasoline for consumers.
“The public gets it,” Greco said. “Our job is to make sure Congress and the president get it and that they listen to the American people.”
API is a national trade association that represents all segments of America’s technology-driven oil and natural gas industry. The study was conducted by telephone September 19-23 by Harris Interactive on behalf of the American Petroleum Institute among 1,034 registered voters across the country, with a sampling error of +/- 3 percent.
