HHS Secretary Apologizes for Health Care “Debacle”

Alaskan Impact: In Alaska, at least one organization created to help Alaskans navigate Healthcare.gov has indefinitely postponed signing people up due to widespread problems with the website. Additionally, over 2 million Americans are being dropped from their current health insurance plans due to the Affordable Care Act.  Yesterday, a website official apologized for the problems in the online health care exchange sites, and today, HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius appeared before the House to answer more tough questions.

Advancing Health Care for Alaska Natives

Alaskan Impact: The Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium (ANTHC) serves as the poster child for best practices for Native American health care under the Indian Health Service (IHS).  The Alaska Native Medical Center in Anchorage is the largest service provider under ANTHC, but it is being held back by a lack of beds for patients and their families.  A nearby patch of land is held by I.H.S., and Senator Murkowski introduced a bill in February that would transfer the land to ANTHC in order for them to construct a new facility that could house more Alaskans receiving care or supporting family members. Yesterday, the House passed the companion bill sponsored by Representative Don Young, and today the Senate takes up the issue.
