The October 2013 Monthly Energy Review (MER), EIA's primary report of recent energy statistics, was released on October 29, 2013.  Preliminary estimates of commercial sector energy consumption indicate that for July 2013:

  • U.S. commercial sector total energy consumption equaled 1.5 quadrillion Btu, a 2-percent decrease from July 2012.
  • Electricity retail sales and electrical system energy losses accounted for 88 percent of commercial sector total energy consumption.
  • Natural gas accounted for 9 percent of commercial sector total energy consumption, petroleum accounted for 2 percent, and renewable energy accounted for 1 percent.

The MER provides monthly and annual data on total energy production, consumption, and trade; energy prices; overviews of petroleum, natural gas, coal, electricity, nuclear energy, renewable energy, and international petroleum; carbon dioxide emissions; and data unit conversions. See What’s New in the MER for a record of changes.
