Hunting and Trapping

Expiration Date: June 30, 2014 unless superseded by subsequent emergency order
EXPLANATION: This emergency order closes the State of Alaska resident and nonresident hunting season for mountain goat in registration permit hunt area RG252, including areas east of Unakwik Inlet and Meares Glacier, west of the Columbia Glacier, and south of the second branch of Columbia Glacier in Game Management Unit 6D. Mountain goat hunting regulations in all other areas of unit 6D are not affected by this emergency order.
REGULATION: Therefore, the following regulations in 5AAC 85.040 (2), Hunting Seasons and Bag Limits for Goat, are superseded by this emergency order, and the following provisions are effective:

Units and Bag Limits
Unit 6(D), Hunt RG252: specifically, that portion east of Unakwik Inlet and Meares Glacier, west of the Columbia Glacier, and south of the second branch of Columbia Glacier.
1 goat by registration permit only; the taking of nannies with kids is prohibited
All other mountain goat hunting regulations in Unit 6 are not affected by this emergency order.

JUSTIFICATION: The most recent aerial surveys resulted in a minimum count of 310 goats within the mountain goat hunt area RG252. The Department set the maximum allowable state harvest at 16 goat units and an additional quota of 1 goat unit for federal subsistence hunters (17 goat units total). Each billy counts as one goat unit and each nanny counts as two goat units. The current harvest is 16 billies, totaling 16 goat units, and additional hunters are currently in the field. In order to prevent over-harvest, RG252 will be closed on 8 October 2013 at 11:59 pm.
