Public Comment Sought on Proposed Helicopter Skiing Operations in Kachemak Bay State Park and State Wilderness Park

(Soldotna, AK) – The Director’s Office of the Division of Parks and Outdoor Recreation has recently received multiple applications to operate commercial helicopter skiing ventures in Kachemak Bay State Park and Kachemak Bay State Wilderness Park.  The division is seeking public comments regarding whether to authorize the proposed activity, and if so, under what conditions.

PUBLIC NOTICE

This letter is notification that the Director’s Office of the Division of Parks and Outdoor Recreation has recently received multiple applications to operate commercial helicopter skiing ventures in Kachemak Bay State Park and Kachemak Bay State Wilderness Park and the division would like to hear your input. 

An authorization to allow helicopter skiing activities to occur in the park may be issued under permitting authorities in Chapter 18 of the Alaska Administrative Code (Special Park Use Permits).

You are invited to submit comments regarding this proposed activity. 

According to 11 AAC 18.025 (c), the director may issue a permit if he or she determines that the following conditions have been met:

  1. Park facilities and natural and cultural resources will not be adversely affected;
  2. The state park is protected from pollution;
  3. Public use values of the state park will be maintained and protected; and,
  4. The public safety, health, and welfare will not be adversely affected.

What other considerations should the division evaluate with regard to this type of activity in these parks?  Considerations could include the following examples: timeframe, geographic area, potential conflicts, plan of operations and number of landings.

You need not respond if you do not have any recommendations.  The purpose of this notice is to gather input before the director makes a determination on whether or not to authorize commercial helicopter skiing within Kachemak Bay State Park and Kachemak Bay State Wilderness Park.
