Friends of Library Gives $50,000 to Anchorage Public Library
The Friends of the Library presented a $50,000 check to APL Director Mary Jo Torgeson during its annual meeting in October. The money will be used on library projects and to improve library services, according to Torgeson.
FOL is a non-profit that holds fundraisers and provides other support for Anchorage Public Library and its five locations throughout the community. With 300 members, FOL has, in recent years, become the primary source of funding for library programs, both for youth and adults. Friends’ donations are also used to improve and build the library’s various collections. Over the years, FOL has donated tens of thousands of dollars to APL.
Besides membership fees, FOL raises money with its annual Beyond the Stacks luncheon and with their fall and spring book sales. The Friends of the Library Fall Book Sale is November 3, from 10 am-4 pm, and November 4, from noon-4 pm. The two-day sale involves the help of more than 100 volunteers to move and process tens of thousands of books and other items. Members are invited to an early entry from 8-10 am, an elaborate continental breakfast and first chance to make selections.
