Pioneer Natural Resources Announces Alaska Leadership Change

ANCHORAGE, ALASKA - October 12, 2011 Pioneer Natural Resources USA Inc. today announced that Ken Sheffield, president of Pioneer's Alaska Division, will return to the Company's headquarters in Dallas, Texas to assume leadership of Pioneer's newly established Corporate Engineering Group

Pioneer has experienced tremendous growth in 2011 and many of the Company's more than 200 engineers are distributed across various disciplines and asset teams. In his new role creating the Corporate Engineering Group Ken will incorporate Pioneer's existing efforts in reservoir engineering, drilling and completions, operations, facilities, recruitment and career development. Ken and his team will be responsible for investigating new technologies and conducting research and development, assisting with special projects and new plays, supporting existing asset teams where technical or staffing gaps exist and providing overall corporate leadership and quality control for the engineering staff

Ken was instrumental in Pioneer's entrance into Alaska and has been critical to successfully building the Company's business in the state. Since 2003, Ken has led Pioneer's Alaska division from exploration activities to the successful construction and start‐up of the Company's Oooguruk development project in 2008. Pioneer is the first independent oil and gas company to operate a field on the North Slope and Oooguruk set the project cycle‐time standard for offshore development projects moving from exploration to first production in fewer than six years. The Company is planning two new exploration wells this winter season with the intent of further expanding the project

During his time in Alaska, Ken served on the boards of the Alaska Oil and Gas Association, an organization he chaired from 2008 through 2011, Alaska Clean Seas, the cooperative responsible for providing effective response services to North Slope oil producers, and the Resource Development Council for Alaska. Ken also took a leadership role in fundraising for both the United Way of Anchorage and Habitat for Humanity. Ken and his wife, Catherine's three children, two of whom graduated from South High School in Anchorage, currently reside in Texas where they are pursuing their educational and professional goals

Succeeding Ken as President of Pioneer's Alaska Division is Todd Abbott. Todd began his career with Pioneer in 2003, serving in a variety of roles including Senior Business Analyst in both the Business Development and Acquisitions Groups and staff support to President and COO, Tim Dove. Most recently Todd has served as Vice President, Corporate Finance and Planning. Todd has consistently demonstrated exceptional executive skills and is an excellent fit to lead Alaska team. Todd and his wife Jenny and their family look forward to enjoying the Alaska outdoors and temperatures that don't register in triple digits
