John Hoyt Appointed
to AEDC Board

Last week, the AEDC Board of Directors welcomed John Hoyt  of First National Bank Alaska as a new board member. Starting as a bank teller more than a quarter-century ago, Hoyt worked in virtually every operational and lending area in Alaska banking before taking on the role as head of First National Bank Alaska’s deposit, consumer credit and card services this year.

As a board member at the Central Peninsula Hospital, Hoyt helped to grow the hospital from a $40 million organization to a $140 million organization in just 10 years. AEDC is excited to announce the arrival of John Hoyt to the organizations Board of Directors.

The AEDC Board of Directors UNANIMOUSLY passed the aspirational narrative and metrics for the Live. Work. Play. initiative last week that states – by 2025, Anchorage will be the #1 city in America to live, work and play. The aspirational narrative gives a detailed look at Anchorage as the #1 city in the year 2025.  The metrics will help to offer feedback about how Anchorage matches up against other major metropolitan areas in the rest of the United States. Read the narrative.

The benchmarked metrics will be announced at AEDC’s Annual Meeting on November 9th, as well as rolling out the new logo and the go forward strategy. We extend an invite to all AEDC board members and investors to attend this monumental event.  Business meeting starts at 8:30am at the Dena’ina Center covering AEDC’s Annual Meeting with lunch to follow from 11am to 12:30pm for the roll out of Live. Work. Play.  The free lunch is limited to 100 people including board members and one representative from each Investor company.  If you are interested in attending please RSVP here.

Postal Reform Bill Impacts on Alaska

In late September, AEDC helped facilitate a discussion about the potential impacts of the Postal Reform Bill (Bypass Mail) at the request of Senator Lisa Murkowski’s office.  An amendment to the Postal Reform Bill would require the State of Alaska to pay the U.S. Postal Service for the cost of bypass mail.  The group met to discuss their concerns with the Senator’s staff and drew a diverse crowd including passenger airlines, air cargo carriers, distributors, transport companies, native corporations and others.  For more information about the Postal Reform Bill click here.

AEDC Hosts National Site Selectors

As part of its ongoing site selector engagement and outreach efforts to attract new industries to Alaska’s Southcentral region, AEDC and AIDEA recently hosted two representative from national site selection firms here in Anchorage for a familiarization tour. Site consultants representing the firm Jones Lang LaSalle from Chicago and McCallum Sweeney from Greensborough, North Carolina were given tours of the major economic centers of Anchorage.  The tour included visiting the Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport, the Port of Anchorage, the Ship Creek area and the U-Med District to showcase Alaska’s economic strengths and existing infrastructure capabilities.

Additionally, AEDC introduced the site selectors to a broad range of local business representatives and policy makers who discussed the pros and cons of doing business in Alaska and industries they felt represented potential growth areas for Alaska.  This familiarization tour was a pilot program which AEDC hopes to expand to several trips of up to 5 site selectors next summer.

More pictures of the visit can be found on our facebook page.
