Karen Gaborik Named Assistant Superintendent for Secondary Education

The school district announced today that Lathrop High School Principal Dr. Karen Gaborik will serve as interim assistant superintendent for secondary education for the remainder of the 2011-2012 school year.

Lathrop High School assistant principal Dave Dershin will take the reins to serve as interim administrative principal.

Dr. Gaborik was born in Fairbanks, grew up in Salcha, and graduated from Ben Eielson High School. She holds a master’s degree in special education and a doctorate degree in educational leadership. She began her teaching career at Ben Eielson High School in 1995 and continued at North Pole Middle.

Gaborik was assigned to Lathrop High School as an administrator intern in 2002. After a semester internship, she became an assistant principal at Lathrop where she worked in both discipline and curriculum. In July 2006 Gaborik was appointed as Lathrop interim principal and has served as the permanent principal at Lathrop since November 2006.

“I am excited and very honored to be selected as interim assistant superintendent,” stated Gaborik. “I have great passion for secondary education, as assistant superintendent I will continue advocating for student achievement and secondary instruction that prepares students for college and the 21st century workforce.”

Gaborik said, “The opportunity is bitter sweet – while I’ve very excited, I’ll miss working so closely to Lathrop staff, students, and parents.”

“Dr. Gabork is a consummate professional, and the district is fortunate someone of her caliber is available to step into the position,” said superintendent of schools Pete Lewis. “She has earned great respect from principals, teachers, and parents in this district. She will be a great addition to the central office.”

Dave Dershin has been an educator for 19 years. In 1995 he taught at Tanana Middle School, moving to Lathrop the following year to teach science and technology. In 2006 he moved into school administration, when he was named assistant principal at North Pole High School. In 2007 he returned to Lathrop as assistant principal for curriculum and instruction.
