Senator McGuire Pleased Deep-Water Moratorium on Oil Exploration Lifted

Anchorage – Senator Lesil McGuire applauded the Obama Administration’s decision today to lift the deep-water moratorium on oil exploration in the Gulf of Mexico.

“The administration has done a thorough job of considering changes needed to the regulatory system and I am encouraged that they have ended the moratorium early,” said Senator McGuire. “I remain concerned however that the announcement today did not include any clarification about the status of offshore exploration in Alaska generally, and Shell’s updated exploration plan for the Beaufort specifically.”

In a letter to Secretary Salazar last week Senator McGuire called for the approval of Shell’s application for a scaled-down exploration program in the Beaufort that will include a single well in 2011.
