Governor Parnell Welcomes JetBlue Announcement

October 27, 2010, Anchorage, Alaska - Governor Sean Parnell today welcomed the news that JetBlue Airways will offer seasonal daily nonstop service from Long Beach Airport to Anchorage next summer.

"This is great news not only for air travelers, but also for Alaska and its tourism industry," Governor Parnell said. "Expanding travel opportunities will lead to greater economic growth and job creation."

The Alaska travel industry has been responsible, annually, for up to 40,000 jobs and $3.4 billion in direct, indirect and induced spending. Additionally, tourism contributed nearly $210 million in revenues to state and local governments in 2009.

Independent travel - largely visitors who arrive by air - peaked in 2008, before dropping by nearly 15 percent in 2009. Alaska saw an uptick in independent travel in many locations in 2010, but did not reach the peak levels of 2008.

JetBlue Airways will launch its Alaska service on May 26, 2011.
