BBB Release: Local BBB Breaks Records With Secure Your ID Day

Free Shredding and Recycling Event Protects IDs and The Environment

Anchorage, Alaska – Oct. 27, 2010 – On Oct. 23, 2010, Better Business Bureau serving Alaska, Oregon and Western Washington helped a record number of consumers and businesses protect identities and save the environment by shredding and recycling at Secure Your ID Day.

Collectively, between the Anchorage, Portland and Everett events, 814 vehicles dropped off over 30,000 pounds of unwanted paper and 358 cell phones.

30,000 pounds (almost 14 tons) of financial records, business forms and other sensitive documents were shredded and recycled for free between the three locations—courtesy of Shred Alaska, American Data Guard and Shred-it.

Facts: According to cleanair.org, one ton of paper from recycled pulp can make a huge impact. The 14 tons of paperwork recycled at Secure Your ID Day saved:

- 238 trees

- 42 cubic yards of landfill space

- 98,000 gallons of water

- 5,460 gallons of oil

- 840 pounds of air pollutants

One cell phone can pollute 40,000 gallons of ground water, according to The Wireless Alliance. By recycling 358 cell phones at Secure Your ID Day, over 1.4 million gallons were preserved.
